In our continued attempt to introduce you to some of the newest and best talent on the indy scene, I am proud to bring you 10 Questions With Super J. Super J is quickly becoming one of women wrestlings fastest rising talents. She was ranked 38 in The Wrestling Clothesline's Top 50 Indy Woman Wrestlers List. Her hometown fed is PCW Chicago and for a 19 year old, she is making her mark on the business!
1. What made you decided to become a professional wrestler, especially knowing it is primarily a male dominated sport?
I've always been a fan of it since I was little and one day I decided, "Hey I can do that!" I never focused on it being a male dominated sport, just something I would really like to get into. I never wanted gender to be an issue, just talent and charisma. But now that I'm actually in the business, I realize just how male oriented it is.
2. For people who may not be familiar with the Super J persona could you give them a little background on her? Who came up with the idea of "the defender of those who can not defend themselves"?
Super J is a superhero, hailing from the Super Justice League. She transformed into J after falling into a tank full of radioactive material and happened to splash some on Radioactive Rick, her faithful sidekick. She didn't become the 'defender of those who cannot defend themselves' until her other half dressed up like her for Halloween and ended up falling down the stairs. When she hit the ground, she thought "Wouldn't it have been great if there had been someone to catch me?" Super J began to dedicate her life to saving those in need. Since her other half was training to be a wrestler, she decided to save money on a wrestling costume and just be herself!
3. As a younger woman in a predominately malesport, are you ever treated differently by wrestlers or promoters?
All the time! When I first started, I was hit on 24/7 by the other wrestlers. Once they realized they weren't going to get anywhere near me, they started treating me like a little sister. Now I have 50 big brothers! I never know what to expect when I go to places outside PCW. Most promoters have been very respectful to me, so I can't complain!
4. What has been your most memorable experience in wrestling thus far?
Any chair shot from Michelle Morgan. In my last match, she swung that thing so hard I'm suprised I still have a head. I will NEVER forget that one...specially when we meet in the ring next!
5. What has been your most embarassing moment in wrestling?
I can't say I've had one yet....
6. What wrestlers do you enjoy watching in action?
I love watching Lance Storm, Chris Jericho, Christian, Chris Benoit and Rhyno in the WWE. As far as indys go, I'm a big fan of Jerry Lynn, and Raven.
7. If you could step into the ring with or against anyone, past or present, who would be your top 3 choices and why?
#1- Molly Holly. She is my idol and I think she is one of the best female wrestlers of all time.
#2- Christian. He has been my favorite wrestler for a long time and he's responsible for getting me interested in wrestling again when I was in high school.
#3- Leilani Kai. When I was little, I loved her! I would watch my tape of her vs. Wendi Richter over and over, trying to immitate their moves. Being in the ring with her would be a childhood dream come true.
8. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love to draw and write, right now I'm working on a Super J comic book. I'm very into music, particularly classic rock, alternative and punk. I play bass, guitar and drums. I like anime and comic books and I am working on getting my art/illustration degree so I can become an animator. I like to hang out with friends and talk to people online.
9. What do you think of the current state of wresting, espcially women's wrestling?
I think wrestling in general is at a low right now. TV ratings are down and show attendance could be better. Women's wrestling is doing ok...I'm doing pretty good with getting bookings and shows, so I can't complain myself. I think the public perception of women's wrestling is getting better on the indy scene, but there's always that drunk guy in the front row screaming, "Take it off!". As far as the WWE goes, they seem to be having more women's matches that don't involve bras and panties, which I like. But who knows, just when I think women are getting respect, they go and do something to make me think otherwise.
10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Still wrestling of course, hopefully full time! I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to make it to the WWE, but I'm realistic in my goals. If I can wrestle 3-4 times a week I'm happy.
