Starman:
I attended the Fire Pro Wrestling show in Crown Point last night. Funny thing is, not many people can say that. At best, there were about 25 of us in attendance. I'm guessing about 1/2 of those were paid admissions. It set the tone for what was a totally disgusting show. My first, and I'll guess, my last Fire Pro show.
On this site, the show was advertised to begin at 6:45. Signs there said 7:00. There was a two minute "dark" match at about 7:20, but the first "real" match didn't begin until 8:00. What did the massive crowd of people (hovering at about 10-15) do during this time, you ask? We were first entertained by Derek St. Holmes discussing the merits of the Fire Pro roster. Then Weston Benton came out, took the mic, and began interviewing the fans. When that was done, he took the mic to the back and we were serenaded by wrestlers singing over the mic. It was, without a doubt, one of the most embarrassing scenes I had ever witnessed.
The wrestlers were some who I thought would put on a great show. However, one look at the "throng" in attendance put any hope of that out of the window. Mind you, the show started a minimum of 1 hour late, due to "techincal difficulties." Yeah, right. All of the matches took a total of 1 hour 25 minutes. That's it. What a waste. At least they knew it sucked. One of the guys came by and said, "I can't wait to see what Starman has to say about this." He knew what he was involved with. Too bad.
The matches were fine, but nothing memorable. Special note, however, has to go to Mr. Garcia, the referee. Without a doubt, the worst, most inept ref I've ever seen. He gave a two-count not once, but twice, during a table match. Huh? He started to do it again, but after being yelled at previously, he caught himself. Another time, when both wrestlers were knocked out, we could distinctly hear one wrestler tell the ref to start counting. He had no clue as to ring control at all. I actually felt sorry for him. It wasn't the usual, planned "not seeing the heels cheat" routine. This poor guy didn't have a clue.
The main event made no sense at all. It was a brass knuckles on a pole match between John Burke and Derek St. Holmes. After going at it for a full 3 or 4 minutes, Derek decided to vacate the ring and get counted out, but as title holder, he got to keep the belt. Then as he is yelling at Burke, Cyanide comes from the back to confront St. Holmes. Then Cyanide challenges and sets up a match with St. Holmes for the next show. All this while Burke, the victor and the only wrestler in the ring, is just standing there. Huh? If anything, get him out of there first. It was awkward and obviously very poorly planned.
Move of the night had to go to Chase Richards. As he and his tag team partner Botch came to the ring, Chase was running around the ring and at one of the corners, slipped and wiped out about 10 chairs. Fortunately for everyone, these were 10 unoccupied chairs so no one else was involved. Funny, funny stuff. It's pretty sad when that will be one of the things I remember most.
Another great moment from that match--Chase and Botch comprised the team from the U.S.A. while their counterparts were from Canada. Since they were from Canada I simply asked them what the capital of Canada is. They couldn't answer me. Priceless. I hope they made it across the border o.k.
Fire Pro should be ashamed of what they presented as a professional wrestling show last night. It wasn't very professional and there really wasn't much wrestling that went on. A sad night for what could have been a great show. I could go on and on but I won't. Hopefully no one will come on and try to defend this fiasco of a production and the thought of this "event" can quickly fade from my memory.
