Trik Davis talks
By Al Lagattolla
Trik Davis is announced as part of Saturday's IWA Mid-South show at Highland, Ind., but his opponent has not yet been revealed.
2004 could be a big year for Davis, who has the potential to break out. He was started in 2002 at PCW, but he didn't emerge there and was in and out of the fed a few times - his first ring name was Nolan Michaels, the reversal of Acid's actual name. He became Trik Davis in 2002, and now he says the biggest change is he doesn't let criticism bother him as much as before.
He credits Steve Stone with helping him find his way to IWA. Wrestlers such as "Delicious" Danny Scott and Bailey Mannix have been talking him up since his PCW days, and it's only natural Davis also has thrived at Scott's Midwestern States Pro Wrestling.
Davis talks a bit with Chicagowrestling.com's Al Lagattolla - via IM and e-mail - about where he's at and where he'd like to be at the end of 2004.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AL: How did working with IWA come about and how many matches have you had there?
TRIK: Well the first match I had there was on the Fourth of July. It was a 6 hour benfit show for a kid who needed a operation. (Steve Stone) ask me if I would want to go down to show the show. I, of course, did. I ended up wrestling Adam Evans. It went pretty OK. I was pretty nervous that day. Then I had my 2nd match aganist Steve in November at Highland. Then the next night aganist a guy who works for MPW in Minnesota named Sasanova. On December 27th i had 2 matches a singles match aganist Emil Sitochi then we tagged against Lancasters Twins.
AL: Is IWA everything you thought it'd be?
TRIK: I think it's better than I thought it would be, because I never thought I would learn so much every time I went down. Plus everybody in the locker room is super cool and willing to teach you stuff.
AL: You've been through a bit in the past, probably a lot for a young guy. How have you grown in the last year and how is your character different from when you started?
TRIK: Eh, I don't let stuff get to me as much any more. When people talk crap about me I used to get really pissed. Now I really don't care. People are going to think whatever they want. No need to get mad trying to change their opinions. My character? Pretty much the same stuff I just come out screaming, running and sliding of the floor. I just try to entertain people if it's by making them laugh or if it's my wrestling ability, whatever works.
AL: What do you think you do best?
TRIK: I think I like technical wrestling the best. I've been learning a lot of new stuff as of late. I've watched a lot of tapes looking for new counters, and some of my friends have showed me some really good stuff
AL: I've seen you at various points of your career, and it seems you've always had potential. Are there any goals you have at IWA? I'm assuming just getting to IWA may have been a goal.
TRIK: Yes it has been on of my goals. I'd like to just keep wrestling there and learning stuff. Some of the guys I would like to wrestle there to named a few are (Chris) Hero, (Alex) Shelley, (Arik) Cannon and JC (Bailey). JC is mostly known as a hardcore guy,but he knows some really cool technical stuff. My goal in wrestling period is to just work as many shows as I can.
AL: How long have you been wrestling now?
TRIK: I started training in May of 2001 at the end of my sophmore year. I had my first match in Febuary of 2002.
AL: At PCW? Or was it somewhere else?
TRIK: At PCW
AL: How many matches did you have in 2002?
TRIK: Not too many maybe 20 probably a little less. Last year I had about 30. I hope this year I could increase that a bit.
AL: Where are you working right now, besides IWA?
TRIK: MSPW, which is going really good right now. They just had a show Saturday and they have another one on the 31st. Then next month they're running 3 shows in 8 days. Plus on February 7th I'll be in Ohio wrestling for a fed named WAR.
AL: Do you have a favorite match, a favorite opponent?
TRIK: Don't really have a favorite match.I like wrestling Steve (Stone) both of our matches have been pretty good. I liked my match with Brad Bradley a couple months ago, and my match with Chandler (McClure).Plus I've been having fun wrestling Mike Matthews for MSPW recently.
AL: How long have you been Trik Davis?
TRIK: Since august of 2002
AL: Did you start coming out to (Run-DMC's) Tricky at that point?
TRIK: I think I started using that in October. I didn't like it too much, but fans thought it was funny.
AL: It makes total sense. You mentioned you've had matches against Stone a few times. What do you like about those?
TRIK: Well, we hit each other really hard. Steve is really cool to wrestle. I owe him a lot. He brought me to IWA in the first place and he's gotten me booked in a couple other places. He's one of my best friends.
AL: What do you think you can accomplish in 2004? What would make it a good year?
TRIK: Just too work as many shows as I can and keep learning. If I have about 45 or 50 matches I would consider that a good year.
AL: Is there anyone you'd want to face who you haven't faced yet?
TRIK: I named a couple earlier in the interview. I'd like to work Justin Kage. We've been friends for a while and I think it would be fun to have a match with him. I'd like to face Colt Cabana, too, in a match or a Simpsons trivia contest. Eiher way it would be good times. There's a ton of other guys I'd like to wrestle, but it would take too long (to list).
AL: What do you think of IWA's move to Highland, Ind.?
TRIK: I think it's gives Chicago fans a chance to really get their money's worth. On one show they get to see some of the best wrestlers of a bunch of different styles: technical, strong style, highflying, hardcore and women's matches.
AL: What do you like best about IWA?
TRIK: It's a great place to learn and a bunch of people willing to teach.
AL: What should fans expect from Trik Davis on Saturday?
TRIK: They can expect I'll be at the show thing, and I'll probably wrestle and stuff.
